What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?

I want to live a life of significance, which my father taught me comes from helping others.  Professionally, this means continually growing as a leader and developing my knowledge to best serve our firm and my clients.  Personally, it is taking care of my family and getting involved in my community.

What’s your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment is being chosen to lead the firm my dad started over thirty years ago.  It involved me going to school for Financial Management, working in an OSJ office in Minnesota, and starting as an advisor in Chicago before moving back to Iowa.  Along the way, I was able to gain different perspectives of our business and go through the struggle that we all need to endure to make it in this business.  Through the struggle and successes, I was able to develop into the person my dad felt comfortable handing over his third child (our firm).

What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?

Most families and businesses don't have a financial plan.  I find many people "wing-it" when it comes to their finances which equates to a mixed bag.  Through proper planning, we help clients get organized to ensure everything is working together.  This gives the client a confidence that they have not had before.

What weakness do your friends and family know you for?

Ironically, I have a reputation of being too organized.

What are you complimented on most in your work?

Those I work with and the clients I serve all know they can depend on me.  This manifests itself in being present in their lives, whether it is celebrating their successes or, more importantly, to supporting them when life is in flux.  This is a trait my dad was known for and something I remain mindful of.

Why are you a NAIFA member?

There is a tremendous need for financial guidance and quality advisors who can deliver it.  NAIFA does a good job of giving new advisors opportunities to grow and helps seasoned advisors improve their craft.  There is also a lot of misinformation about what the client-advisor relationship should look like.  NAIFA is one of the impassioned voices advocating for our profession.

How has NAIFA made a difference in your practice/life?

As a student of financial planning, NAIFA has given me the opportunity to learn from others in our business.  The wisdom of the veteran advisors and the enthusiasm from the newer advisors provides a tremendous amount of value throughout the year.  Our local chapter also provides a lot of chances to get involved in the community, including helping teach financial literacy to 8th graders.  My wife is a teacher so it is enjoyable to be able to also support her by partaking in the teaching.
